NFL Draft

This blog today is about the 2008 NFL Draft that we just had on Friday the 25th of April. Usually what happens at these things are the first 32 players picked are guarnteed a contract for well over a million dollars. This year the first round was a little different there was only 31 picks due to what happened with the Patriots in the "spygate" scandal that is another story for another time. They had to basically give up their first round pick this year for their actions. There are usually 6 people that are invited to attend live at the draft.

So now it was time for the draft and with number one pick the Miami Dolphins selected Jake Long an offensive tackle from the university of Michigan, not a bad choice for a team that is in it's rebuilding period and has an upcoming young guy in QB John Beck. Next was the number two pick and it belonged to the St. Louis Rams and they selected Defensive End Chris Long out of the university of Virgina (no relation to Jake) he is the son of hall of fame DE Howie Long of the raiders. Another good choice for a team that struggled putting pressure on the QB. And with the number three pick the Atlanta Falcons selected Matt Ryan QB from Boston College, with this pick the Falcons were looking for their franchise quarter back and I think that they found one with this pick. The numer four pick belonged to the Oakland Raiders and with that selection they picked RB Darren McFadden from the university of Arkansas, McFadden brings power and speed to an up and coming young offense that might suprise a few teams. And with the number five pick in this years draft the Kansas City Chiefs selected DT Glen Dorsey from LSU, I believe he was the best player on the board and when he fell to the Chiefs they were very excited and knew that he could come in right away and help that young stacked defense with the run defense to plug up some holes. With the number six pick in the draft the New York Jets selected DE Vernon Gholston from Thee Ohio State Buckeyes, this guy can go from DE and move to OLB quick he has the size and speed to do so and that will help them out alot. With the number seven pick in this years draft the New Orleans Saints selected DT Sedrick Ellis from USC, this is a pick that was needed since they struggled in the run defense last year this guy can come in right away and help them out. with the number eight pick in the draft the Jacksonville Jaguars moved up in the draft to fill a need at Defensive End and selected Derrick Harvey from Florida, last year that had some injuries at this position and needed to add some depth and with this guy they will get an immediate impact player. With the number nine pick in this years draft the Cincinnati Bengals selected LB Keith Rivers from USC, They brought him in to fill a desparate need at LB since the retirement of David Pollack, and the absence of Odell Thurman, this guy can come in and help this struggling defense. And with the 10th Pick the New England Patriots selected LB Jerod Mayo from the U of Tennesse, remember when I stated earlier that the team that had to forfit their first round pick and it was the Patriots, well they got this pick from a trade with the 49ers. These guys went 16-0 in the regular season they were just looking for some youth in their LB Corps.

That was a breakdown of the first ten picks of this years draft. The next pick that I want to discuss with you all is the first round pick for my Titans. The need for them was to get a weapon for my boy Vince Young, you know like a deep threat kind of WR, and at the time the Titans were ready to make their selections no WR's were taken yet and their was some good ones left. For instance Devin Thomas from Michigan State, and Vince's college teammate Limas Sweed. The the table was set for the Titans and when the 24th pick came they announce "With the 24th pick in this years draft the Tennesse Titans Select.....RB Chris Johnson from East Carolina" WHAT? a running back are you kidding me, that is one position we do not need that is for sure we are already set at that position. Now in order for VY (Vince Young) to succeed as a QB you have to surround him with some weapons that he can throw to and honestly a running back in the first round is definately not doing that. That was a big mistake on their part and honestly what were they thinking.

Well that is it for now I hope you enjoyed the breifing of this years NFL Draft I hope that you all have learned alot. Have a good evening.
